2023 Advanced Fuels International Cooperation Seminar

The Advanced Fuels International Cooperation Seminar was held successfully in Beijing on April 17th, as part of the 4th Global Biomass Energy Innovation and Development Summit Forum. The seminar was jointly organized by the U.S.-China Energy Cooperation Program (ECP) and the Biomass Energy Industry Promotion Association (BEIPA).

Over 150 representatives from various sectors, including governments, research institutions and organizations, universities, and both domestic and international enterprises, participated in this seminar.

Li Ye, the former director general of Supervision and Management of the National Energy Administration (NEA), and Chase McGrath, the agricultural attaché of the US Embassy in China, delivered opening remarks for this forum.

Zhou Lin, a Senior Renewable Fuel Tech manager at Honeywell UOP, shared insights into the manufacturing process of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). She explained how this technology can effectively reduce carbon emissions, improve fuel efficiency, and sustainable development. Zhou also highlighted Honeywell’s commitment to renewable energy and showcased the company’s development direction and future plans in this field, positioning Honeywell as a leader in sustainable development.

Zhu Wenjiao, the ISCC Product Expert at Bureau Veritas China, elaborated on the crucial role of ISCC certification in sustainable fuel production and consumption. She provided a detailed explanation of the meaning and standards of ISCC certification and shared Bureau Veritas’ experience and achievements in biofuel certification and sustainable development. Zhu also emphasized the importance of circular economy and bio-economy and stressed that ISCC certification can promote the sustainable use of biomass resources and promote the construction of circular economy and ecological civilization.

The meeting was attended by distinguished experts and scholars, including Zhao Kai, the China chief representative of the Global Methanol Industry Association, Karim Fahssis, the China Head of Decarbonization of Maersk Group, and Prof. Liu Dehua, the director of the Institute of Applied Chemistry at Tsinghua University. The seminar engaged in discussion on a range of topics related to clean fuels, including the current state of development of clean fuels both domestically and abroad, sustainable fuel technologies, progress in the application of biomass methanol, and the technical route of cellulosic ethanol.

The advanced fuel international cooperation seminar proved to be an important platform for nations to collaborate in the area of sustainable fuels. Participants agreed that the seminar not only facilitated communication among countries but also promoted cooperation in reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable development, thereby making a significant contribution to the global cause of emission reduction. It is imperative for countries to work together to promote the R&D of sustainable fuel technology and collaboratively create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy future.
